Tips About Proper Footwear and Your Feet

April is when the spring season really kicks into gear. It’s the time of year when people take to the outdoors for running, walking or doing other healthy activities.

Whether you’re a casual runner who logs the occasional mile, someone who enjoys a regular long walk or the kind of person who hits the pavement every day, you want to have proper footwear. While the right pair of shoes can help you go the distance, you want to be careful not to clock too many miles in one single pair.

Generally, running shoes should be replaced every six months. After that time period, shoes can lose the cushion, which might put the wearer at risk for stress fractures in the feet and legs. Worn out shoes can add to instability and can result in an increased risk of sprained ankles, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, runner's knee and even hip injuries.

Of course, the six-month timeframe isn’t a hard and fast rule. Marathon runners are likely going to need to replace the shoes far sooner than those individuals who lace up for walk a few times a month.
